Abortion Stops a Beating Heart


I chose the National Right to Life Committee as my charity because their mission is to stand up for those who can't stand up for themselves. Their goal is to restore legal protection to innocent human life; their goal is to make abortion no longer a legal practice.

NRLC has been instrumental in achieving a number of legislative reforms at the national level, including a ban on non-therapeutic experimentation on unborn and newborn babies, a federal conscience clause guaranteeing medical personnel the right to refuse to participate in abortion procedures, and various amendments to appropriations bills which prohibit (or limit) the use of federal funds to subsidize or promote abortion in the United States and overseas. (EDIT: I think Obama has changed that now...)

Did you know that since 1973, after Roe vs. Wade, the heartbeats of more than 47 million unborn babies have been silenced by “safe, legal” abortion? Did you know that that's more than all of the combined casualties of every major war in which the United States has been involved? The annual number of abortions has nearly doubled since Roe vs. Wade, from 744,600 to 1,313,300 in 2000. For every 1,000 live births, there are 306 abortions, and there are more than 140,000 second and third trimester abortions each year.

Studies have shown that as early as 20 weeks of age, and possibly even earlier, unborn infants have the ability to feel pain. Yet they still continue to abort in the second and third trimester, causing excruciating pain to the unborn child.

An unborn child has less legal protection than commercial livestock. If you were to, say, own a slaughterhouse. The only legally humane way of killing your livestock was to kill them in a way so that they would feel no pain: whether by gas or chemicals, or even by a single blow. Yet D&E abortions involve the dismemberment of the unborn child by a pair of sharp metal forceps. Instillation methods of abortion (performed even in the third trimester) involve the replacement of up to one cup of amniotic fluid with a concentrated salt solution, which the unborn child inhales as the salt burns away the child's skin. The child lives in this condition for up to an hour. In neither of these techniques is the unborn child provided with any form of anesthesia.

Think of how many more people would have the chance of living out their lives. Think of how many more people would have the chance of fulfilling their dreams. Think of how many more people would have the chance to serve under God. I chose NRLC because they are the voices for those who cannot speak for themselves. I chose NRLC because I want abortions stopped and lives saved. I chose the National Right to Life Committee because abortion stops a beating heart.
